Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory
a vibrant and culturally rich First Nation community on the eastern peninsula of Manitoulin Island. It’s a must-visit for those interested in Indigenous heritage, outdoor adventure, and authentic experiences. Wiikwemkoong (locally pronounced Wiky) spans over 412 km² of unceded land—meaning rights were never surrendered to Canada—making it Ontario’s largest reserve and the island’s largest Anishinabek community (Ojibwe, Odawa, Potawatomi).
Wiikwemkoong Annual Cultural Festival (Pow-Wow)
- Held over the Civic Holiday weekend (first weekend of August), this is one of Eastern Canada’s largest and longest-running pow-wows. Expect competitive dance performances, drumming, traditional cuisine, crafts, and storytelling—a profound cultural gathering.
