Manitowaning

Manitowaning, the administrative hub of Assiginack Township, sits on the sheltered Manitowaning Bay off Lake Huron—intersected by Highway 6 and close to Wikwemikong and South Baymouth.
The name derives from an Ojibwe term meaning “home of the Great Spirit” or “Cave of the Great Spirit”.

History & Heritage
First established in 1836 as a First Nations education centre, it later grew into a major shipping port for Great Lakes steamers. Manitowaning was the first and last Island stop for Owen Sound Transportation vessels.
