• Bridal Veil Falls: This is Kagawong’s most prominent natural attraction. Visitors can hike down to the base of the 11-meter waterfall, and even walk behind the cascade for a unique perspective. There are various trails around the falls, offering different views and hiking experiences.

• Old Mill Heritage Centre and Post Office Museum: Housed in a historic stone building that was once a pulp mill (and later a hydro-electric plant), this museum showcases local history, including the area’s timber and fishing industries, and features annual exhibits. • Kagawong Municipal Marina: Located on Mudge Bay, the marina offers a quiet and laid-back experience for boaters. It’s a convenient base for exploring the North Channel and is relatively close to the Benjamin Islands.

• Beaches: Kagawong has a kid-friendly sandy beach in the heart of the village, and a more expansive beach, Maple Ridge Sandy Beach, just a couple of kilometers around the bay.

History:

Kagawong was founded nearly 150 years ago by the Henry brothers, William and Robert, who were drawn to the area’s abundant spruce and white pine for timber harvesting. They established a mill, which initially processed timber for paper (famously for Sears & Roebuck catalogues) and later converted to a hydro-electric plant, providing power to Manitoulin Island. The village became a busy port, exporting produce, livestock, fish, and lumber. The Henry brothers faced tragic deaths in 1882, which ultimately led to the family selling their timber operations. Interestingly, William Henry’s son, George Stewart Henry, later became the 10th Premier of Ontario.

Population:

Kagawong is part of the Township of Billings. In the 2021 Canadian census, the Township of Billings had a population of 753, showing a significant increase of 24.9% from 2016.
